Dua for Strengthening the Memory

In our journey of learning, understanding and memorising, we often face moments where we struggle with memory or focus. As Muslims, we are blessed with beautiful duas (supplications) from the Qur’an and Sunnah that can help us strengthen our memory and increase our knowledge, by the Will of Allah.

Dua for Strengthening Memory:

سُبْحَـٰنَكَ لَا عِلْمَ لَنَآ إِلَّا مَا عَلَّمْتَنَآ ۖ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ ٱلْعَلِيمُ ٱلْحَكِيمُ
رَبِّ ٱشْرَحْ لِى صَدْرِى
وَيَسِّرْ لِىٓ أَمْرِى
وَٱحْلُلْ عُقْدَةًۭ مِّن لِّسَانِى
يَفْقَهُوا۟ قَوْلِى
رَّبِّ زِدْنِى عِلْمًۭا
ٱللَّهُمَّ نَوِّرْ قَلْبِى وَزِدْ قُوَّةَ سَمْعِى وَبَصَرِى وَحِفْظِى

Transliteration of Dua for Strengthening Memory

Subḥānaka lā ʿilma lanā illā mā ʿallamtanā, innaka anta al-ʿalīmu al-ḥakīm
Rabbi ishraḥ lī ṣadrī
Wa yassir lī amrī
Waḥlul ʿuqdatam min lisānī
Yafqahū qawlī
Rabbi zidnī ʿilmā
Allāhumma nawwir qalbī wa zid quwwata samʿī wa baṣarī wa ḥifẓī

Glorified are You. We do not know except what you have taught us. Surely you are all-knowing, all-wise. My Lord, expand for me my Bosom and ease for me my task and remove the knot from my tongue (speech) so that they may understand my speech. My Lord increase me in knowledge.
O Allah, fill my heart with light and increase the strength of my hearing, my sight and my memory.

This dua consists of verses from the Holy Quran (Surah Baqarah and Surah Taha) including the verses recited by Prophet Musa (a.s) when he was given the task of confronting the Pharoah.

Practical tips to help Strengthen the memory

Suggested actions that can aid memory:

Regular Recitation of the Qur’an: Engaging with the Qur’an daily can enhance memory.

Healthy Lifestyle: Adequate sleep, balanced diet, and physical activity contribute to better cognitive function.

Avoiding Sin: Sins can have a spiritual and mental consequences. Imam Shafi’i noted the connection between sin and forgetfulness.
